Gwendolyn Wesley, Seventh and Eighth Grades
Gwendolyn Gardenia Wesley is a devout born-again Christian born in Manning, South Carolina on July 21, 1949. At age 6 she moved with her mother, Mrs. Margaret Oliver, and her grandmother, Mrs. Lillie Brogdon, to Philadelphia, PA. At an early age Gwen began to show interest in singing and dancing and studied and pursued these interests all through elementary and high school. She sang in her choir in junior high school and attended modern jazz dance classes both in school and privately.
These music and dance studies paid off at the end of her senior year of high school as she and her friends, Cassandra Ann Wooten, Nadine Felder, and Jean Davis formed the highly exciting, yet minimally successful R&B goup HONEY AND THE BEES. The group recorded and made appearances around the Philadelphia area. After winning a talent show they toured as the opening act with many famous artists, most notably, Jerry Butler and James Brown. After the break-up of the HONEY AND THE BEES, Ms. Wesley and Cassandra Wooten teamed with Cheryl Mason-Jacks and recorded three highly successful Disco albums under the name, THE RITCHIE FAMILY, with whom she toured the world.
In November of 1981, Gwendolyn gave up the secular singing and performing world and gave her life to Jesus Christ at the Messiah Evangelical Baptist Church in Philadelphia. In 1985 she moved back to her birthplace of Manning, SC and continued her work for the Lord with Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. She is currently serving her church as president of the evangelism team, bible study teacher, member of the usher ministry and praise dance choreographer. She is also the past vice president of the Young Women’s Auxiliary of the Black River Missionary Baptist Association. She gave up this position to take on the presidency of the usher ministry of said association. In 2002 Gwen was certified by the South Carolina Baptist Congress as a teacher, which qualifies her to teach Bible subjects on the local and state level.
Gwen continues to use her beautiful voice as she sings with the G. P. Windley Inspirational Choir of Ebenezer Baptist Church and with her friends, Michelle Holland and Yolanda Frazier, as the gospel trio, SISTERS IN CHRIST.
Mrs. Wesley is married to the famous trombonist and musician, the legendary FRED WESLEY. They have two sons, Fredric, III and Victor.
Gwendolyn Wesley’s motto is: I LOVE JESUS BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED ME. (I John 4:19)
